Welcome to 10 Things I said WTF to, an edition of WTF that will arrive in your inboxes on the last Monday of each month. It will be a round up of ten things from the ending month that have made me say WTF - all for various reasons, good or bad. Ranging from something minuscule and mundane like a recipe i’m loving, or bigger life issues and chaotic world events. Maybe you’ll discover some new things to try, buy, eat or watch!
Siedrés x MANGO vs Gimaguas
One day in June I randomly decided to pop onto the Mango website and I was literally shook!!! What in the Gimaguas is going on here?? They released a summer collaboration with Turkish brand Siedrés, and it’s one of the only high street collabs I’ve enjoyed in a long time. My favourite piece was this baby pink belted one piece which would be absolutely perfect for dancing all night on holiday or at a festival. But I also love these sunglasses and floral kitten heels.
IHowever, I do feel a tad weird about high street collaborations that are so heavily inspired by other brands…like no one can deny how a lot of this collection looks exactly like Gimaguas, with all the studding and asymmetrical floaty hemlines. It also feels especially sad when the brand that has been “duped” is one who pave the way for trends and don’t design like anybody else does. Gimaguas really does feel like a stand-out brand of the past few years for me, I only own a few pieces from them but love and treasure them so much! Plus it’s female founded and produced to a much higher quality than Mango, which makes me personally want to not jump at buying anything from this collaboration, especially as the price point isn’t that different? (p.s…lots of really good Gimaguas in various online sales ATM.)
BRAT
Dare I say no album has had the cultural impact that Brat has, in a really long time? Let me just start this by saying, please please don’t come for me swifties!! This isn’t about Taylor, literally everything in the world is currently about Taylor and us non-swifties need a little moment of respite. No hate to her, her first few albums are incredible, but 2024 is Charli’s year.
The marketing for Brat has been perfectly executed, I haven’t walked by anything lime green and not automatically said “brat” for weeks now. My whole feed and FYP is filled with green everything, discourse about Charli and Lorde’s frenemies lore and people defining what brat summer means. Charli couldn’t have put it better when she said brat summer can simply be “a white vest top, a bic lighter and a 20 pack of cigs” because that is such a classic British summertime vibe.
The whole clean girl aesthetic has been quite overwhelming online for the past year or so, and when you’re a girl who sometimes likes to go out till 6am and get a bit fucked up, it can make you feel like you can never be a part of that. Even when no matter what you did at the weekend, you’re still at work 9am Monday with your shit together. Brat is giving us the space to be as unapologetically messy as we want and it came at the perfect time.
Also let’s not forget the actual contents of the album which is perfection, especially the recent contribution of the ‘Girl, so confusing’ remix with Lorde which hasn’t left my brain since I first heard it. It feel’s so relatable for any girl I think, like who hasn’t had unintentional beef with someone and awkwardly had to hash it out? I also need to know who said Lorde walked like a bitch when she was 10 years old??? 10?!
Brat will 100% be my album of the summer, but I feel like I need to listen to it on a portable speaker in a park while getting slightly burnt to enjoy it to it’s full potential.
Matt Healy & Gabriette…engaged?
Honestly WTF? I guess when you know you know… but I couldn’t help (along with the rest of the world) being a little shocked at Matty Healy and Gabriette being engaged after like 7-8 months of dating. I was even more shocked when I was doing some nosey stalking and realised I’m the same age as Gabriette?! And Ethel Cain, Chappell Roan, Sydney Sweeney etc etc… there’s nothing like an internet deep dive to make you feel like you’ve accomplished nothing. ANYWAY, as someone who first saw The 1975 over ten years ago and has been a fan ever since, it didn’t cross my mind that Matty Healy would ever be the marrying type, as that man is chaotic to say the least. I’m predicting a vegas elopement for them before the end of 2024.
Challengers
I finally saw Challengers and was sadly…disappointed. Call Me By Your Name and Bones And All are some of the best films I’ve ever seen, so maybe I just expected too much from it? Don’t get me wrong - Josh O’Connor is hot and the iconic three-way kiss scene was also hot, but the film was just waaaaay too long and I honestly just didn’t care that much about the characters. I really loved all the music and some of the visuals, but I didn’t walk away feeling excited or eager to rewatch.
WTF HQ?!?!?!?!
🚨🚨 🚨 BIG NEWS ALERT 🚨 🚨 🚨 WTF officially has an office!!! Maybe I watched too much magazine focused/fashion reality TV in my youth but working for myself and having my own cute desk set-up has been a rogue childhood dream of mine for as long as I can remember. As you can see above I’m clearly v v excited about this finally becoming reality, after only a year and a half of writing WTF it feels insane. As someone who finds it impossible to work from home without getting distracted, staying in their pyjamas all day or ending up napping on the sofa - I couldn’t be more excited to have somewhere to get dressed in a cute outfit and “go to work” every day. This space will be used for writing, creating content and honestly who knows what else! I’d love to look into some video content, merch and other fun things for WTF in the second half of 2024.
Big thank you to everyone who subscribes and also everyone who upgraded their subscriptions to paid earlier this year (or recently!), because of you I’m living my dream job and I couldn’t be more grateful!! I can’t wait to finish getting it all set up and start working on the many many upcoming newsletter ideas I have stored in my notes app 💓
Katherine Moennig for Quinn?!!
Enable 3rd party cookies or use another browser
I’ve shared my love for Quinn many many times on here, but it may have just reached new heights. Alongside all the incredible independent voice actors they have creating audios each week, they also work with celebrities who narrate Quinn original series’ every few months or so. Last time it was Andrew Scott, which was already overwhelming enough, but their newest one has me literally feral with anticipation.
It’s a western themed WLW series, and they’ve been teasing the narrator all weekend. Obviously, being the talented detectives that chronically online women are, the Quinn community has deciphered from various Tik Tok’s like the one I’ve inserted above, that it’s Katherine Moennig (aka Shane from The L Word, aka my no1 female crush). If you haven’t watched The L Word then I recommend you simply watch this Tik Tok to get acquainted with Shane. But if you like female friendship focused 90’s/early 2000’s shows based in LA/NYC with messy relationship drama, then you should definitely also watch The L Word because it’s amazing. I know everyone thirsts over Kristen Stewart (rightly so), but Katherine Moennig was the original Kristen Stewart vibe before Twilight even existed!!!
Seeing Ethel Cain Live
This month, I finally saw Ethel Cain live. I love all of her work so so much, but Preachers Daughter is my number one favourite album to ever exist and I feel like she so rarely plays in the UK. It was everything I dreamed of and somehow more, no words could even describe how incredible her voice is, especially IRL. Still been thinking about it daily and it’s been weeks now!!
These Boots
I’ve been looking for some beige-y/tan long boots that aren’t cowboy boots for a while now as my sudden love for knee high boots has spiralled out of control and they’re all I want to wear!! After seeing someone I follow get gifted these ones by Dico Copenhagen I realised they may be the perfect pair and now I can’t stop thinking about them.
Shirley Temples
Tell me why in my 26 years of life I’d never had a Shirley Temple until this month? I love cherries, I love ginger and I love fizzy drinks so it couldn’t be more up my street. My boyfriend very kindly came home one day with all the necessary ingredients after I wouldn’t stop banging on about wanting to try one and now I can’t stop drinking them! I’ve definitely been off drinking a bit more recently, so this is my new favourite mocktail for summer.
Lisa Says Gah x Relax Lacrosse
Sport shorts are my go-to ATM and Relax Lacrosse do the best ones, so obviously their collaboration with Lisa Says Gah! was going to be perfect. When it was released I couldn’t decide which colour to get and of course they sold out before I could get my hands on a pair…but I think they’re back on pre-order so I need to make my mind up asap. Both colour combos are amazing and the bows are too cute.
