Today’s newsletter was originally meant to be all about capris because I spent the majority of last week anxiously and excitedly awaiting the arrival of my first ever pair. My TikTok has been flooded with capri styling videos for months now, so I wanted to try them for myself, discuss the trend and share some cute pairs for you guys to potentially purchase. However, I’ve done a total 180 because to put it nicely - they looked horrendous. I was truly humbled, and honestly maybe I deserve it for buying into a micro-trend? So instead the whole experience inspired me to turn this week’s WTF into an unstructured ramble, where I’ll probably just word vomit about various fashion trends that are currently filling up my feed.
It’s only right to start off with the very thing that led us here - capris. When I first saw this trend resurfacing I was slightly skeptical as I haven’t had my ankles so exposed since I left my late teenage indie-sleaze era. Which throughout, I lived in skinny jeans that cut off halfway down my shin. But even before then I was a big fan of a 3/4 length! I was sixteen and working at Topshop, and absolutely obsessed with culottes. If you’re not familiar with culottes, I like to think of them as the more relaxed, big sister of capris. I had a black pair that I wore with absolutely everything, but mostly with a baby pink faux fur gilet (also Topshop) and heeled ankle boots (also, probably Topshop). It may sound questionable now, but at the time it was probably the coolest outfit I’d ever worn. What I’m trying to say is that I’m no stranger to a cropped trouser, I was just shocked that this trend was re-surfacing so soon? That was until I realised my love affair with culottes was 10+ years ago, so we’ve done a full trend cycle since then (which makes me feel old).
