Whenever I turn on the TV, women are wearing heels. Whether it’s a reality show or a sit-com or a film, they’re always trotting around in some sort of heel. Even in shows like Criminal Minds or CSI where women are literally chasing down serial killers, they’re always in some unnecessarily high heeled boot. I just assumed this was the norm when I was younger and that once I reached 18 I’d too spend my days wobbling down the streets. I even went through a phase from about 16-17 where I tried to wear heels during the day because it made me feel more ‘grown-up’. It didn’t last very long. Back then it was the norm for teenage girls to turn up to house parties in stiletto’s loaned from the depths of their mums wardrobe, or picked up in New Look after school on a Friday night. Now it feels like Air Force’s are the more common choice and heels aren’t even considered (I think?? Don’t judge me if I’ve got that totally wrong, I don’t know what teenagers wear these days!!). I vividly remember wearing a pair of blue suede platforms to go clubbing on my seventeenth birthday, and being absolutely devastated when they inevitably got trashed and covered in vodka red bull. However, since then, I honestly don’t remember a time where I’ve actively chosen to wear heels besides weddings or my graduation. So why do we still see so many heels on TV?
I do slightly blame Carrie Bradshaw and the rest of the SATC girlies for this, as they made it look like running around New York in Manolo Blahnik’s was totally normal behaviour. As if somehow wearing 4-5 inch heels every single day wouldn’t literally destroy your feet? I can barely walk after wearing my Ganni buckle flats to work two days in a row. Yet, on my annual re-watch of SATC that I do every single year, it makes me think that I should start wearing more heels.
