A few months ago I saw a video where a creator was discussing how the ribbons on anything and everything trend would soon evolve into rosettes/badges etc, the thought tickled something in my brain but I couldn’t picture it at all. How would I even begin to explore that without looking like I was venturing into clown-core? That was until I saw this outfit. Clairo recently wore this red ‘Sandy Liang Pony Pin’ on her Charm tour, and it’s been on my mind ever since.

I’m definitely not a sensible shopper and often make impulse purchases that lead to spiralling, which always ends in me listing my whole wardrobe on Vinted to try and recoup the costs, but something in me couldn’t justify £158 for this pin. Mostly because I wasn’t sure how often I’d actually wear it, and wondered if it was simply something that looks cool because it’s on Clairo but might not quite translate into my day-to-day wardrobe.

Sandy Liang Pony Pin in Red - £158

Making my own version definitely crossed my mind, but I’ve spoken before about my feelings towards ‘dupes’ (which have essentially just become, fakes) and I didn’t want to be a total hypocrite by ripping an independent designer off. However, after some moral back and forth in my head I decided that making one for my own personal enjoyment isn’t the same as copying someones design to eventually profit from it. The final thing that confirmed my decision was seeing this TikTok, which I included in last weeks newsletter. I knew I needed to at least try and recreate it so I’d hopefully stop dreaming about it 24/7! So off I went in search of craft supplies.
