I really can’t imagine a better way to get into the ‘New Year, New Me’ spirit than by moving house two weeks into 2025, even though doing it so close to Christmas might be the stupidest idea I’ve ever had. Yet, there’s nothing like a brand new space to trick your mind into thinking you’ve got your life together, and therefore will magically transform into the best version of yourself the second you move in. As much as I am joking, I’m ashamed to say there is a small part of me that genuinely believes this.
We’ve lived in our tiny little flat for 3 and a half years now and I’ve honestly loved every minute of it. I didn’t even view it before we moved in because we were so stressed about finding somewhere, but just from the pictures I knew it was the perfect place for us. It was in an amazing location, cheap (for Brighton) and had such an interesting layout. It’s technically a one bed but has french doors in-between the bedroom and living room so you can turn it into a long studio, or keep them separate, which is ideal if a friend needs to stay over. This also means there’s two doors to every room so you can run around the whole flat in a circle. I have such amazing memories of us just chasing each other round on one of our first nights here. Despite downsides like the kitchen being barely big enough for two and the bathroom tiles being horrific, over the last few years this flat has been so special.
Me and my fiancé already lived together as friends when we became a couple, so moving in together was never something we really had to “have a chat” about. However, we did previously also live with one of our other friends, so when it came to moving into this flat just us two we’d actually only been together for 8 months or so. He’d not long moved back to the UK and I’d only moved to Brighton just over a year ago, so we didn’t really have everything we needed to fill our own space. I find it so funny looking back on the photos from our first year here because in comparison to our flat now, it feels so empty. But I think that’s what made this place feel so special, because we chose 90% of the things in it together. It’s evolved as our relationship has evolved, and all the furniture and trinkets are a reflection of that.
Even though we both hate change and love this space, we’ve naturally outgrown it. We want to comfortably work from home without fighting over the dining table, to be able to have more than two friends over at a time and most of all - to not be able to see the drying rack from wherever we are. So we’re moving! I can say this now without the risk of jinxing anything because we do physically have the keys - but this new house is my absolute dream! I fell in love with it immediately and would’ve done anything to secure it, and somehow it all fell into place.
I feel very lucky but we are actually moving somewhere a lot bigger than our old flat, which means I needed to get my decorating head on. There’s only so much you can do when you’re renting, but luckily we’ve been blessed with wood floors and white walls throughout our new space so it’s a perfect blank canvas. Therefore I’ve been focusing my inspiration on furniture, prints and trinkets. I’m never not saving interior inspiration on Pinterest so this is the perfect time to put years worth of pins to good use! Here are a few themes that have caught my eye recently…
We already have a round dining table that I was very kindly gifted by Muuto, so I wanted to make it the centrepiece of our new dining room. I like how the round shape makes the space feel more open, and I think it’ll fit maximum 4 chairs around it which keeps it from being too bulky. It looked super cute in our current flat but has always been pushed to one side to save space, so I cant wait to finally use it for dinner parties! I’ve been looking at similar set-ups to see what type of chairs would work best and I think I love the mis-matched vibe, which is convenient as we have loads of random stools and chairs dotted around.
