Summer Styling Food For Thought

We’re always hearing about how trends exist in a constant cycle which means that every 10-20 years certain pieces, prints or general vibes make their way to the forefront. Despite how many times I’ve been told this, I’ve never actually taken the time to dig back into the archives and see what exactly was happening in fashion back then so I can try stay ahead of the curve. So, I thought what better time than now? As we quickly approach a new season, I’ve been super intrigued to see what the collections from some big fashion houses looked like in SS 2005 + 2015, and if there are many similarities with whats currently trending, plus if we find any fresh styling inspo for summer then that would be a treat.

Miu Miu SS 2005

Why am I kind of into this? I haven’t seen many dresses in this shape circulating recently, but it very much gives peplum, which is a trend we’ve seen rapidly resurfacing over the last 1-2 years. After most of us swore off peplums for life, Ganni somehow managed to convince us they were cool again with their viral tie front blouse. I don’t own a dress in this style, but after seeing this look I feel like it could actually be super cute and flattering? It also gets bonus points for how perfectly it would disguise a post-dinner bloat situation.

Striped rugby/polo shirts have been so popular recently, which could be down to them featuring so heavily in Miu Miu’s recent collections. I’ve been browsing around physical shops more than usual at the moment and there are tonnes and tonnes of them out there! I really loved the Saks Potts one that came out in a huge range of colour variations just before they very sadly shut, but stupidly I never added one to my wardrobe! If you’re looking to try this trend for yourself but can’t quite stretch to the Miu Miu budget, then there are two good options - here & here. I personally think the ones without a white collar look a bit more luxe and avoids the risk of staining it with make-up!

Miu Miu SS 20015

This ensemble as a whole doesn’t feel very 2025, but certain elements of it definitely feel familiar. The pearlescent coat is really giving Sandy Liang, along with the peter pan collar and exaggerated bows on the shoes! As for the chunky belt, the shape is extremely 2015, however we are definitely in the midst of a thick belt revival and I’m still on the hunt for one that isn’t too gimmicky.

I wouldn’t say this feels very summery to me? But it’s definitely inspiring! The middle ruffle down the shirt immediately makes me think of the rosette trend that’s recently been starting to surface (or this Good Squish sachette), and obviously capri’s have been extremely popular since last summer. The shoes also remind me of those Gucci rubber sandals that everyone was wearing a few years ago, despite banning myself from plastic shoes (blisters) these really make me want to embrace a classic mule this summer. Sadly, I cannot get behind the houndstooth or imagine bringing it back in any way, it reminds me too much of being 16.
