Hello! I hope you all had a lovely weekend and for those of you in Brighton, I urge you to get a little treat for dinner and cure the post-pride hangxiety that’s inevitably seeped into Monday. I know this isn’t the way I usually start these newsletters but I really want to start doing more chatty introductions! It often feels like I’m just sending stuff into the void and I’d love to create a more community-like vibe, so that starts now :) I’m also gonna quickly round-up some things that I’ve been thinking about a lot over the last few days…

The Noösphere
Mama, There’s a Plagiarist Behind You
Around a year ago, I opened the TikTok app and was served a video of Maalvika discussing an essay she’d just published. ‘It’s my most well-researched Substack,’ she announced proudly…

I’ve been watching this unfold from the sidelines and as someone who’s previously been a victim of Substack plagiarism, I can truly say that there is nothing worse than someone trying to profit off your hard work. I thought it was so badass that Katie publicly called out the girl who plagiarised her because honestly sometimes we’re all too neutral about things. It’s happened to me twice now and both times I’ve confronted the people, which after some back and forth led to the accounts being taken down. It’s obviously scary, but we all deserve to stand up for ourselves more!

All weekend Demi Lovato’s new single has been stuck in my head, just looping around on constant repeat. I don’t think I can quite say I love it, but I’d be happy to hear it in a club (when am I ever in a club??). This comeback/rebrand definitely took me by surprise, which upon reflection is silly because music is clearly soooo back in it’s pop princess era and it would be crazy for anyone like Demi to not make a comeback RN. The whole thing is giving me big Charli XCX/Rebecca Black vibes, and I’m desperately trying to figure out how I can replicate this Prada outfit on my upcoming trip.

Finally I just wanted to mention - WTF is a reader supported publication which means that I’m able to dedicate my time to it thanks to you guys! This is mainly through paid subscriptions (ILY!!), but also through engagement which is totally free and helps a bunch. If you enjoy reading then I’d really appreciate it if you clicked the little heart at the bottom of the newsletter or left a comment so WTF can reach a wider audience! That’s all from me so let’s get into the good stuff…

A couple of weeks ago Zoë Kravitz stepped out in NY wearing tiny basketball shorts paired with peep toe heels, and the internet went crazy.

in case you didn’t know the one

Every major fashion outlet was reporting on this look, it felt inescapable. I kept wondering to myself how something so simple could cause such a stir? Then it finally clicked, it’s a perfect example of high-low dressing. A formula used to create outfits that ooze relatability, and make you feel aspirational about your own style and wardrobe.

(To define it simply, high-low dressing is when you pair inexpensive items like vintage t-shirts or denim shorts with more luxurious items - heels, sequins, designer bags etc)

Kravitz’s look appears effortless and like she just threw it together, and even though her style is consistently very chic - I highly doubt this pairing wasn’t intentional. Celebrities are notorious for these high-low outfits because we (the normal people) eat it up and replicate within our own budgets, which inevitably creates a buzz and cements them as a style icon. Obviously when we see them at fashion shows or red carpets in head to toe designer it’s fun to observe, but it doesn’t feel super accessible. You can head to Zara and buy a striped polo and pleated grey micro mini skirt, but it sadly doesn’t have that same Miu Miu feeling, it just feels like a knock-off. When putting together a high-low outfit, its more about the vibe it conveys than the actual items. Which is why i’m certain Zoë’s recent look will be the most replicated combination of the summer (what we have left of it, that is).
